City continues routine food health inspections under new ordinance
This month, the updated Food Safety and Retail Ordinance (FSO) took effect. While public hearings for the adoption of new rules and training of food inspectors on the updated protocols required by the FSO occurred, the City has continued with pre-opening and complaint-based inspections to ensure restaurants and food service providers can continue to operate safely. From August 1 to August 23, the City conducted 92 inspections. Effective immediately, all food inspectors will resume routine inspections to ensure safety for our community.

First West Nile virus death reported in Bernalillo County
The City of Albuquerque Environmental Health Department and Bernalillo County Planning and Development Services Department announced today the first West Nile virus death of 2024 in Bernalillo County, involving a 65-year-old woman. This case is one of two positive human cases reported in the county this year. The city has also detected West Nile virus-positive mosquitoes through routine monitoring at various locations.

Albuquerque adds new amenities to enhance local parks
The City’s Parks & Recreation Department (PRD) has added shade structures and drinking fountains to dozens of parks across Albuquerque, with more planned for this year. These amenities aim to help residents spend more time at parks, especially during the hot summer months, by providing additional shade and water.

Morris Street construction project set to begin August 26
ALBUQUERQUE - ABCWUA crews will commence a project on August 26 to install a connector pipe across Morris Street, enhancing the utility’s non-potable water system. This system is utilized for irrigation of parks and golf courses on the north side of town. The connection work aims to provide an additional supply option.

City partners with state land office to aid school for blind expansion
The City of Albuquerque and the New Mexico Commissioner of Public Lands have collaborated to facilitate the expansion of the New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (NMSBVI). This initiative involves a lease agreement for a vacant piece of state trust land, which the city will sublease to NMSBVI. The Albuquerque City Council approved this lease agreement at its meeting.

Albuquerque issues $9.25M revenue bonds for energy efficiency projects
Council Bill No. O-24-34, sponsored by Klarissa Pena, authorizes the issuance, sale, and delivery of City of Albuquerque Municipal Infrastructure Gross Receipts Tax Revenue Bonds, Series 2024. The principal amount is not to exceed $9,250,000. The bonds aim to finance energy efficiency projects associated with city facilities and cover related issuance expenses.

Route 790 resumes service linking Westside Albuquerque with key educational institutions
As staffing allows, ABQ RIDE is working to return bus service paused due to staffing shortages. On August 19, the popular Westside Route 790 returns as an important link from the Westside of Albuquerque to the University area and major destinations in central Albuquerque including Old Town and Downtown. The much-requested route benefits commuting students and staff to the University of New Mexico (UNM) with one change. It will now also serve Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) in addition to the UNM Campus.
