The City of Albuquerque Environmental Health Department’s Air Quality Program was notified of a fire at 4600 William St SE 87105 on May 31, 2024, at 7:00 a.m. Bernalillo County Fire Rescue responded to the scene while the Air Quality Program continued to monitor the situation. Although the air quality monitors did not reach levels standard to issue a health alert, an alert was proactively issued to warn residents of the smoke. The alert was issued from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Bruce Huckell, associate professor of Anthropology at The University of New Mexico and a leader in the fields of geoarchaeology, lithic technology, and early prehistoric foragers in North America, died on May 13. Huckell received his bachelor's degree in 1972, his Master of Arts in 1976, and his doctorate degree in Arid Lands Resource Sciences in 1990, all from the University of Arizona.

The City of Albuquerque's vision for a specialty housing navigation center for young adults aged 18-25 is progressing as the city has closed on the purchase of the San Mateo Inn at 2424 San Mateo Blvd NE, in City Council District 7. Acquired for $4,780,000, the hotel will be renovated into a housing navigation center offering age-appropriate wraparound services to help young adults access permanent housing and achieve self-sufficiency.

Today, Mayor Tim Keller, City Councilors Tammy Fiebelkorn and Renee Grout, and the Health, Housing & Homelessness department inaugurated the first 49 units completed at Los Altos Lofts. This former hotel has been converted into affordable housing as part of the City’s Housing Forward ABQ initiative. The City purchased the property on Hotel Avenue in April 2023 and immediately began work to convert the 104 hotel rooms into efficiency and one-bedroom apartments. The first tenants will begin moving into completed units starting June 1, 2024.
