Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has authorized the deployment of New Mexico National Guard personnel to assist the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) due to ongoing public safety issues, particularly along Central Avenue. Albuquerque faces challenges from the fentanyl epidemic and increasing juvenile crime, necessitating immediate intervention.

"The safety of New Mexicans is my top priority," stated Governor Lujan Grisham. She emphasized the role of the National Guard in supporting the APD with essential duties, allowing trained police officers to concentrate on maintaining community safety. "This partnership represents our commitment to addressing the fentanyl crisis and juvenile crime with every resource at our disposal," she said.

Approximately 60-70 National Guard personnel will be deployed to Albuquerque starting in mid-May. Their preparation to aid the APD is currently underway under the guidance of the New Mexico Department of Homeland Security, Department of Public Safety, State Police, and APD.

The initiative aims to improve public safety and the quality of life for Albuquerque residents by addressing immediate concerns while working towards long-term solutions. National Guard personnel will participate in various support roles, including:

- Scene security and traffic control at critical incidents

- Medical assistance and humanitarian efforts along Central Avenue

- Prisoner transport unit assistance

- Transit security enhancement

- Metro Court security support

- Aviation/Sunport security assistance

- Shield Unit case preparation support

- APD Drone Program operational assistance

This strategic deployment is intended to allow APD to redirect police resources to enforcement activities while continuing essential services. The National Guard is expected to provide a visible, trusted presence that supports law enforcement duties, enhances officer presence in high-crime areas, and reinforces community trust through engagement.

APD Chief Medina's memorandum requesting assistance and Executive Order 80 are included with the announcement.
