Western New Mexico University’s men’s basketball team defeated Fort Lewis College 95-86 on Thursday at Whalen Gymnasium in Durango, Colorado. The Mustangs’ win was supported by their performance at the free-throw line, making 38 out of 45 attempts.
The game saw Fort Lewis score 44 points in the paint, but Western New Mexico’s advantage at the charity stripe played a key role in securing the victory. The matchup drew an audience of 894 spectators.
Western New Mexico took an early lead in the first half with a three-pointer from Carson Kelly. Keylon Dorsey added four points from free throws soon after, helping to extend the Mustangs’ advantage. Despite efforts by Fort Lewis to narrow the margin, Western New Mexico held onto its lead, with contributions from Kelly and defensive rebounds by Andre Harris. The first half ended with Western New Mexico ahead 41-37.
In the second half, Isaiah Broady scored on a dunk assisted by Harris to further extend the Mustangs’ lead. Although Fort Lewis managed to close the gap several times, Western New Mexico maintained control. Kelly made consecutive three-pointers around the four-minute mark remaining in regulation, increasing their lead. Dorsey set up Broady for a three-pointer at 11:47, adding to their momentum. Nolan Brown made six free throws late in the game and contributed three steals as Western New Mexico closed out a nine-point win.
Kelly finished with 23 points—including four three-pointers—and grabbed four rebounds. Broady added 16 points and six rebounds. Harris recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds while blocking four shots. Brown was perfect from the line and made notable defensive contributions.
Western New Mexico will play its next game against Colorado Mesa University on Saturday, November 22nd at Whalen Gymnasium in Durango.
