Western New Mexico University's men's basketball team began their season with a 70–55 win over New Mexico Highlands at the Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena in Portales, New Mexico. The Mustangs led 33–24 at halftime and maintained control throughout the game, starting their season with a 1–0 record.
Carson Kelly contributed 12 points for Western New Mexico, making 10 out of 11 free throws, which helped the team maintain its lead in the second half. Isaiah Broady was the team's top scorer with 18 points and made several important plays late in the game. Cortavious Seales and James McCallum each added 10 points to round out the offensive effort.
Defensively, Western New Mexico limited New Mexico Highlands to just 24 points in the first half and a total of 55 for the game. Robert Dix led New Mexico Highlands with 17 points, while Nikk Williams scored seven. Both teams committed 24 fouls, but Western New Mexico was more effective at converting free throws and capitalizing on transitions.
The victory sets a positive tone for Western New Mexico as they continue their schedule this weekend. The university is a member of NCAA Division II and competes in the Lone Star Conference.
