Western New Mexico University (WNMU) has announced the addition of two new players to its volleyball program as part of the 2026 recruiting class. Head Volleyball Coach Geno Frugoli introduced Payton Zenan and Briseis Armendariz as the latest signees during National Signing Day.
"I can't think of a better way to start our 2026 recruiting class than with these two young ladies," Frugoli said. "Both have a strong desire to be here and we're excited to get them in the gym."
Payton Zenan, an outside hitter from Sahuarita, Arizona, currently plays for Zona Volleyball Club and Sahuarita High School. She has helped her high school team reach three consecutive State 4A Playoff appearances and has received several honors, including Second Team All-Conference in State 4A and First Team All-Region (4A Gila) for three years. Zenan was also recognized by Sports360AZ for academic achievement in girls' volleyball.
Her club team finished fifth at the 2025 USA Volleyball Junior National Championships and third at the Las Vegas Classic. Academically, Zenan is involved in student leadership roles such as Student Body Vice President and is a member of both the National Honor Society and Honor Roll. She plans to study Chemistry at WNMU with hopes of working in pharmaceutical sales.
"Payton showed tremendous interest and came to both our camps. She demonstrated she can be a quality player in our conference and can fill a number of different roles for us. That versatility is another reason we're excited Payton chose to become a Mustang!" said Frugoli.
Briseis Armendariz joins from El Paso, Texas, where she plays libero for Sun City Volleyball Club and Del Valle High School. Armendariz led her high school team to three straight Bi-District Championships, collected over 1,500 career digs, and holds national rankings in several defensive categories. Her accolades include MVP honors for District 2-5A, being named a PREP1athlete, First Team All-District selection, and recognition by local media as one of El Paso's top high school volleyball players.
Her club experience includes helping Texas Storm finish fifth at the 2025 USA Volleyball Junior National Championships, third at Chicago’s Windy City National Qualifier, and first at the Las Vegas Classic. Academically ranked among the top ten percent of her class, Armendariz intends to major in Cell and Molecular Biology with career goals in laboratory science or physician assistance.
When asked about her decision to join WNMU, Armendariz stated: "I picked WNMU because the team of girls shared a bond that was very strong and welcoming. From the first camp I participated in, the girls were so quick to make me feel comfortable and included. They enjoy each other's company and the whole team is close, which is a good environment that I would love to be a part of and build long-lasting friendships. I also connected well with the coaches and felt that I could make an impact on the team after coming down to visit! The campus is very beautiful and close to my home town, which makes it easier for my parents and family to go watch my games and be a part of my collegiate sport experience. Furthermore, they offer great programs for the majors I'm considering."
Coach Frugoli added: "Bri is extremely quick and has a great attitude. She should help support our defensive efforts. We're excited Bri chose to become a Mustang!"
Western New Mexico University competes in NCAA Division II athletics within the Lone Star Conference.
