The Western New Mexico University men's basketball team lost its season opener to the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) with a final score of 107-70 at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso. The Mustangs collected 25 rebounds during the game.
Western New Mexico started the first half with a free throw by Keylon Dorsey, briefly taking an early lead. UTEP responded quickly, pulling ahead through fast breaks and points scored in the paint. Turnovers were an issue for the Mustangs, as they committed 16 in the first half, which allowed UTEP to extend its lead. At halftime, Western New Mexico trailed 52–27.
In the second half, the Mustangs attempted to close the gap with several fast-break plays. Dorsey scored on a layup and converted a free throw at 12:26, bringing their score up to 42 points. Isaiah Broady contributed with a dunk late in the game but Western New Mexico continued to face difficulties catching up. UTEP maintained control throughout and responded with consistent scoring efforts, including a three-pointer from David Tubek at 7:17.
By the end of regulation, UTEP secured a win with a score of 107–70 over Western New Mexico. Broady led his team by scoring 15 points and making three steals while collecting seven rebounds. Carson Kelly added 12 points and provided six assists. Cortaviaus Seales contributed 13 points on five field goals made. Andre Harris was effective from the free-throw line, making six out of seven attempts and recording two blocks.
The Mustangs will play their next game against New Mexico Highlands University on Friday, Nov. 14 at 5 p.m. in Portales, New Mexico.
