Western New Mexico University’s volleyball team secured a four-set victory over Adams State University at Plachy Hall in Alamosa, Colorado, on Wednesday. The Mustangs won with set scores of 27-25, 18-25, 25-23, and 25-21. The win improved their overall record to 11-15 and their Lone Star Conference record to 5-9. Adams State now stands at 14-11 overall and 8-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
The match opened with both teams trading points before Western New Mexico took an early lead following a block by Ava Frezza and Brynlee Barris. Adams State managed to tie the score several times throughout the first set, but the Mustangs held off each push. A late rally from Western New Mexico was capped by a kill from Frezza assisted by Savanna Haefs, securing the first set.
Adams State responded in the second set with strong defensive plays and service aces, overcoming key kills from Jayden Hughes and Carley Deck of Western New Mexico. The Grizzlies closed out the set for a 25-18 win.
In a closely contested third set, Western New Mexico regained momentum behind kills from Barris and Daphne Posthumus. Jade Rampton added another key point late in the set before Posthumus delivered the winning kill for a 25-23 finish.
The Mustangs built an early advantage in the fourth set through blocks and kills from Rampton and Barris. Despite efforts by Adams State to even the score multiple times, Western New Mexico maintained its lead with help from service aces by Kaitlyn Salgado and Haefs. Posthumus sealed both the set and match with a final kill.
Posthumus led all players with 13 kills on 30 attempts for a .400 hitting percentage along with six total blocks and 18 points. Barris contributed a team-high of 15 kills at .538 hitting efficiency plus three blocks for 17.5 points. Haefs recorded 24 assists while Haggard had nine digs alongside her own tally of assists.
For Adams State, Natalie Gallegos finished with eight kills (.333) and four solo blocks; Peyton Priddy provided offensive support through her setting (13 assists) as well as defense (six digs); Hadleigh Richardson added thirteen kills despite hitting challenges; Ellie Miller also contributed as setter.
Western New Mexico will next host Sul Ross State for Senior Day on Saturday, November 8 at Drag’s Court in Silver City beginning at noon.
