Angelo State defeats WNMU volleyball team in straight sets

Angelo State University defeated Western New Mexico University in a volleyball match on Tuesday night at Drag's Court. The visiting team won in straight sets, with scores of 25-17, 25-16, and 25-20. Angelo State improved their record to 15-7 overall and 9-2 in the Lone Star Conference, while Western New Mexico fell to 10-12 overall and 5-7 in conference play.

The first set saw Western New Mexico tie the score early after a kill by Daphne Posthumus from Hannah Haggard. Brynlee Barris added a service ace to keep the match close at 5-5. Hailey Meeks contributed a key kill that brought the Mustangs within one point at 11-11. Despite these efforts, Angelo State pulled ahead late in the set and secured a 25-17 win.

In the second set, Angelo State took control with an early run, leading 11-2 before Western New Mexico responded with kills from Posthumus and another ace by Barris to reduce the deficit to three points. However, Angelo State maintained their advantage and closed out the set at 25-16.

Western New Mexico started strong in the third set with an early lead but could not hold off Angelo State’s response. The Belles overtook the Mustangs at 7-5 following plays by Demi Carter and Julia Hopkins. Kills from Barris and Kaitlyn Salgado helped narrow the gap late in the set, but Angelo State finished with a 25-20 victory.

Posthumus led Western New Mexico with eight kills and four solo blocks for a total of 12 points. Barris had six kills without errors and served two aces for a total of 10.5 points. Haggard provided 11 assists along with four digs across three sets, while Jayden Hughes contributed five digs, two blocks, and one ace defensively.

For Angelo State, Madi Parrish recorded a match-high of 16 kills with a .394 hitting percentage and totaled 16 points. Krizia Perez led her team defensively with fifteen digs, while Carter added ten kills on .500 hitting.

Western New Mexico will next play against UT Dallas in Richardson, Texas on October 31 at 5 p.m.
