Eastern New Mexico University’s football team broke two Lone Star Conference records during their 59-35 victory over Western New Mexico University at Steve Loy Family Foundation Stadium in Portales, New Mexico.

Quarterback Jarius Stewart set a new conference record for rushing yards in a single game, finishing with 373 yards on 33 carries and scoring five touchdowns. The Greyhounds as a team rushed for 712 yards, just seven short of the all-time NCAA Division II record set in 1971.

"It feels amazing to have a game like that," Stewart said after the win. "Especially breaking records along the way."

Stewart also emphasized the importance of capitalizing on offensive opportunities: "finishing drives." Eastern New Mexico scored on nine of its 14 possessions.

The annual Chile Bowl rivalry began with both teams trading touchdowns on their first three possessions. Western New Mexico briefly led after taking advantage of an Eastern turnover, entering halftime ahead 28-24.

In the second half, Eastern New Mexico regained control with a quick scoring drive capped by Stewart and followed up with strong defensive adjustments. The Greyhounds scored three unanswered touchdowns to secure their fifth Chile Bowl victory.

"Offensively we were rolling all day long. We established the fullback early and they were trying to not let us get the ball outside," head coach Kelley Lee said. "The offensive line played light's out."

Demarion Finch contributed 125 rushing yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Additional rushing scores came from Vee Williams and William Reynolds, while quarterbacks Logan Howell and Chad Ragle added significant yardage on the ground.

With such an effective running game, passing was limited; Stewart completed Eastern’s only pass—a 38-yard connection to Gerry Gomez.

"It's just hard work," lineman Christian Greigo said about the win. "We've been working hard every single day." Griego praised his quarterback: "I love that man. I will block for him every single day of the week. I am so proud for him."

On defense, Dylan Quartieri led with seven tackles (3.5 for loss), while Matthew Quartieri and DJ Moore also made key contributions as Eastern limited Western New Mexico’s passing attack in the second half.

Eastern New Mexico is scheduled to host Sul Ross State next week at Steve Loy Family Foundation Stadium, where caps will be given to the first 1000 fans courtesy of HOMESPOT.
