New Mexico United secure playoff spot after win against Rhode Island FC

New Mexico United finished their regular season with a 2-1 win over Rhode Island FC at The Lab on Friday night. The victory extended the team’s unbeaten streak to seven matches as they head into the 2025 USL Championship Playoffs.

The match also marked the final professional appearance of Daniel Bruce, New Mexico United’s longest-serving player. After the game, Bruce addressed fans and teammates in a farewell speech. “Brucey” delivered an emotional farewell speech that brought fans and teammates alike to their feet, setting the tone for a memorable evening at The Lab.

United opened the scoring in the 21st minute when Mukwelle Akale scored following an assist from Valentin Noël. Rhode Island FC equalized in the 38th minute with a header. Just before halftime, Chris Gloster was fouled in the penalty area, leading to a successful penalty conversion by Talen Maples to give United a 2-1 lead.

In the second half, New Mexico United’s defense held strong. Goalkeeper Kris Shakes made five saves, including one in the 86th minute that helped secure all three points for his team.

Talen Maples was noted for scoring the decisive penalty and leading United’s defense throughout a high-pressure match. He has now scored four goals in his last five appearances. Mukwelle Akale continued his recent good form by opening the scoring and pressing opposing defenses throughout the game.

The stats showed Rhode Island FC had more shots (15) compared to New Mexico United (11), but United had fewer fouls (12) than their opponents (15). Three Rhode Island players received yellow cards during the match: Albert Dikwa (35’), Marc Ybarra (41’), and JJ Williams (82’).

New Mexico United will next compete in Round One of the USL Championship Playoffs while carrying momentum from their current unbeaten run.
