The New Mexico Ice Wolves are recognizing Petr Philippov, a former player and mentor, for his significant contributions to hockey in New Mexico. As he prepares to return to Moscow, the organization is reflecting on his influence within the local hockey community.

The team will dedicate its North American Hockey League (NAHL) home game on Saturday, October 25, to Philippov. The event will honor his service to hockey at the Outpost Ice Arenas and his involvement with youth programs. Community members are invited to join in acknowledging his efforts.

Philippov arrived in Albuquerque before the Ice Wolves’ first NAHL season in 2019. He played with the team for parts of two seasons before completing his junior career with the Oklahoma City Jr. Blazers in the NA3HL. Afterward, he continued playing at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota and graduated with a business degree in 2025.

During college breaks, Philippov returned to New Mexico where he volunteered extensively at the Outpost Ice Arenas. Due to ongoing conflict in Ukraine, he was unable to travel home and instead became active in supporting youth hockey development locally. His roles included assisting with camps and clinics, mentoring players and families, helping develop skills, working alongside coaching staff, sharpening skates, and supporting arena projects.

The organization describes Philippov as a role model for players and a valued member of their community. His departure comes as his student visa expires but he has indicated plans to stay connected: “Though Petr’s journey is taking him back to Russia, he has promised our entire community that his departure will not be goodbye, but a sincere ‘see you soon and often’! When he does return, the NM Ice Wolves, Outpost Ice Arenas, the hockey community in New Mexico and everyone that calls him a friend will welcome him home.”

“From all of us – the Ice Wolves organization, the youth players you inspired, the adult players you played with, the families you touched, and the fans who cheered you on – Thank you, Petr! Hockey is stronger in New Mexico and our community is stronger because of you. You will always be part of the Ice Wolves!”
