New Mexico United secured a spot in the 2025 USL Championship Playoffs after a 1-0 victory over Phoenix Rising FC on Saturday. The win, achieved on the road, brings United’s record to 13 wins, 10 losses, and 4 draws for a total of 43 points this season.
Throughout the match, New Mexico United controlled possession and limited Phoenix Rising’s opportunities. In the first half, United kept Phoenix pinned in their own half and created several chances while maintaining a strong defensive shape.
Goalkeeper Kris Shakes was instrumental in preserving the clean sheet. His key moment came in the 63rd minute with a one-handed save during a one-on-one situation. This performance marked his fifth career clean sheet and fourth of the season.
The decisive moment occurred in stoppage time when New Mexico was awarded a penalty following a foul inside the box. Team captain Talen Maples converted from the spot in the 96th minute to secure the win and guarantee United’s place in the postseason for a fourth consecutive year.
"Talen Maples converts from the spot and @NewMexicoUTD is seconds away from a playoff berth!" stated USL Championship on social media.
Defensively, Maples led by example throughout the match, organizing his team and helping shut down Phoenix’s attack before scoring the game-winning goal.
Statistically, New Mexico registered ten shots compared to nine from Phoenix. Both teams had three shots on goal. United’s defense allowed only three shots on target while goalkeeper Shakes made four saves.
