Western Oregon University secured a 41-20 win over Western New Mexico University in a football game held at McArthur Field in Monmouth, Oregon. The Wolves improved their season record to 3-2, while the Mustangs dropped to 1-5 overall and remain winless in conference play.
The Mustangs started the game with an early lead following a 37-yard pass from quarterback Connor Ackerley to Deuce Zimmerman, culminating in a touchdown pass to Anthony Flores. However, Western New Mexico missed the extra point and led only briefly.
Western Oregon responded quickly, with Tyler Konold running for a touchdown after Jermaine Land's 20-yard rush. The Wolves capitalized on turnovers throughout the first half, including a fumble recovery and an interception returned for a touchdown by Malik Ross. By halftime, Western Oregon had built a significant lead of 34-13.
Ackerley completed 40 of 55 passes for 395 yards and three touchdowns but also threw four interceptions. Zimmerman was his top target, catching 11 passes for 141 yards and scoring one touchdown—his fifth consecutive game with a receiving touchdown this season. Flores added eight catches for 77 yards and two touchdowns.
On defense, Joshua Hopphaus led the Mustangs with ten tackles and one sack. Eddie Byrd III contributed an interception in the fourth quarter that temporarily halted Western Oregon’s offense.
For Western Oregon, Carson Workman rushed for three touchdowns on seven carries. Land finished with 85 rushing yards and one touchdown despite losing a fumble. Keyvaun Eady caught three passes for 39 yards.
Ross made key defensive plays for the Wolves with four tackles, one sack, one forced fumble, and an interception returned for a score. Aden Murphy led all players with twelve tackles.
The Mustangs will look to rebound during their upcoming homecoming game against Sul Ross State at Ben Altamirano Field in Silver City on Saturday, October 18 at 7 p.m.
