New Mexico United secured a 1-1 draw against Monterey Bay FC following a late equalizing header from Luther Archimede.
According to ESPN Radio 101.7 "The Team," Kris Shakes was the standout performer in the first half for New Mexico United, keeping his team in contention despite persistent pressure from Monterey Bay FC. He made three significant saves, including a fingertip stop on Adrian Rebollar’s looping effort that seemed destined for the top corner. Shakes' composure and sharp reflexes ensured United went into halftime level, preventing the match from slipping away early.
Monterey took the lead shortly after the interval, capitalizing on United’s sluggish start to the second half. A giveaway in midfield by Sergio Rivas allowed the hosts to advance the ball into the box, where Tarik Scott tangled with Kipp Keller before it fell loose. Xavi Gnaulati seized the opportunity, drilling the ball low past Shakes in the 48th minute to give Monterey a deserved 1-0 advantage.
United appeared stagnant for much of the second half, failing to record a single shot on target until the closing moments of the match. In the 87th minute, a well-executed sequence between Mukwelle Akale and Zico Bailey created chaos inside the area, with the ball hanging dangerously in front of goal. Both Thomas Amang and Archimede challenged for it, but it was Archimede who rose highest, heading home the equalizer to rescue a vital point.
The 1-1 draw meant United remained in third place in the Western Conference. However, with only seven games left, every result is critical in their battle for playoff positioning. Dropping points to a struggling Monterey side adds pressure on United to secure wins against tougher opposition. Their next opportunity comes September 24 on the road against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC, a match that could prove pivotal in their postseason chase.
