The New Mexico History Museum has selected artist Molly Mendenhall to create a mural celebrating the centennial of Route 66. The mural will be displayed in the museum’s lobby from January 2026 through January 2027.

Mendenhall was chosen from among five finalists who submitted concept designs for consideration by the museum’s selection committee. Earlier this year, the museum issued an open call for artists and received 190 submissions from across the country. The committee selected Mendenhall’s design because it captures the historical significance and evolving spirit of Route 66.

"I’m thrilled to be painting a mural for the History Museum in celebration of the Centennial of Route 66, the historic route which symbolized a nation of mobility, migration, and adventure, and the highway from which many communities, such as my own, have grown their vibrant city centers," said Mendenhall. "Today, these communities contain a well-rooted history in support of the arts, so if you want to see a rich and diverse representation of street art and murals, head to Route 66!"

Mendenhall’s mural will blend historic imagery with modern elements by using techniques that transition from a sepia-toned depiction of the 1930s to a contemporary view of Albuquerque coming into color.

"We are delighted to have Molly working on this project. Route 66 had such a significant impact on New Mexico, and Molly’s deep connection to the state and her understanding of the land and its history will no doubt lead to a thoughtful and significant artwork," said Keri Schroeder, curator and project lead.

Work on the mural is set to begin in November. Visitors can meet Mendenhall and observe her process during regular museum hours. In addition to displaying Mendenhall's work, an exhibition featuring all five mural finalists will be held at the Governor’s Gallery in the Capitol Building Roundhouse in January 2026.

The New Mexico History Museum is part of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. It offers opportunities for exploring various perspectives on history and encourages dialogue about social and cultural issues at its campus located near Santa Fe Plaza.
