Eastern New Mexico University's men's and women's rodeo teams participated in the Frank Phillips College rodeo held in Canadian, Texas over the weekend. Five athletes from ENMU advanced to the short go round, with two men and three women representing the university.
"It was great to be back competing as a team," said head coach John Sharp. "We want to use these rodeos as learning opportunities for our program. We had five make it back to the short round and aspire to have more competing not only for multiple runs, but also team points."
The men's team finished ninth overall, while the women's team placed fifth.
Jacob Walters led the men's team by partnering with Teagan Roukema of New Mexico Junior College. The pair won the first go in team roping with a time of 6.6 seconds and took fourth place in the short round at 8.7 seconds. Their combined performance earned them second place in the average and 140 points.
Duncan Adamson returned for ENMU in steer wrestling and secured ninth place overall.
In goat tying, Shaeden Marr was fourth in the long round with a time of 7.7 seconds and finished first in the short round at 7.4 seconds, earning 140 points as ENMU's only point scorer in this event. Mackinzee Dermody placed seventh in the long round at 8.1 seconds but ended up ninth overall without scoring points.
Ali Terry continued her consistent performance in barrel racing by qualifying for the short go with an 18.05-second run, then improving slightly to an 18.01-second run that earned her fourth place on Saturday night and sixth overall for a total of 40 points.
ENMU will now spend about a month preparing for its final three rodeos of the fall semester, starting October 23-25 in Lovington, New Mexico, where New Mexico Junior College will host an event that marks one of three competitions over four weeks to conclude this part of their collegiate season.
