Western New Mexico men’s golf tied for sixth after first day in Montrose

The Western New Mexico University men's golf team began their season at the San Juan Intercollegiate held at the Bridges Golf & Country Club in Montrose, Colorado. After the first day of competition, which was interrupted by lightning during the second round, the Mustangs are tied for sixth place with a score of six under par.

In the opening round, the team performed strongly, tying for second place with a 13-under-par 271. Jacob Alcorta leads the Mustangs and is currently tied for 16th at two under par. He posted a bogey-free 67 in his first round and started his second round with an eagle. Jayden Schmitz and Jonty Butcher are both tied for 19th at one under par; Schmitz shot a 69 in his opening round and made an eagle on the 11th hole during round two, while Butcher recorded two birdies on par-3 holes.

Oscar Feschuk and Tyler Jackson are tied for 33rd at one over par after strong starts. Feschuk delivered a bogey-free 68 in his first round, and Jackson closed out his opening round with three consecutive birdies to finish with a 67.

Max Kaesebier, competing as an individual, is in 62nd place at plus-19.

Colorado Mesa leads the tournament at twenty under par, followed by Cameron University at seventeen under and Colorado Mines at ten under. Hayden Bowman from Lubbock Christian is tied for first individually at eleven under par.

Play will resume tomorrow morning as teams complete their suspended second rounds.
