Firefighters from various departments across Southern New Mexico gathered at the New Mexico Museum of Space History in Alamogordo on September 13, 2025, for the annual Climb the Cube event. Despite challenging weather conditions, over 120 participants came together to honor first responders who lost their lives during the 9/11 attacks.
The event attracted firefighters from Ruidoso, High Rolls, Alamogordo, Holloman AFB, and Mesilla. Participants climbed a symbolic 110 stories, representing the floors of the World Trade Center towers. Many firefighters completed the challenge in full turnout gear, with some carrying equipment weighing up to 100 pounds.
Alamogordo Fire Department Deputy Chief Liam Lashley reflected on the significance of the event: "Everyone in this career field knows what it costs to give the ultimate sacrifice whenever it comes to saving people’s lives. The ladies and gentlemen of 9/11 in New York City knew that when they responded to the Twin Towers that day. I love that we have this event where we get to honor them."
The gathering was marked by camaraderie and solemn reflection as participants shared stories and celebrated their achievements. Organizers encourage community participation in next year's Climb the Cube.
The New Mexico Museum of Space History is part of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs and is a Smithsonian Affiliate. It highlights New Mexico's contributions to space exploration and includes attractions like the International Space Hall of Fame and New Horizons Dome Theater.
