Free well water tests offered in Farmington by state departments

The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) and the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) are organizing a free well water testing event in Farmington. The event is scheduled for Saturday, October 18, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Farmington Grower’s Market, located at 3041 E Main St. The testing, typically costing around $150, will be offered at no charge to the first 100 participants or until supplies last.

Participants need to bring their water samples for testing. Results will be mailed within two to three weeks after the event. Justin Ball, Ground Water Quality Bureau Chief, said: "Private well owners in San Juan County can take charge of their drinking water by coming to the water fair." He added that free testing helps individuals understand their water quality and protect their health.

Residents should follow specific guidelines when collecting samples: run water for two to three minutes before collection, use a clean container without odors, and if possible, collect water before any filtration systems. They should also provide basic information about their wells.

For those unable to attend personally, samples can be sent with others as long as they are properly labeled with contact details and well information. Only private wells used for drinking water will be tested.

These "water fairs" allow owners to check pH levels, specific conductance, and nitrate levels—key factors in safe drinking water. High nitrate levels pose risks to pregnant women and infants.

While NMED conducts these fairs for educational purposes regarding private wells, it does not regulate them. Since Fiscal Year 2022, NMED has tested over 750 private wells across 31 events statewide.

For more details on upcoming events or other inquiries, visit NMED’s event calendar or contact them directly.
