The Western New Mexico University women's tennis team began play on Friday at the Kimbell Memorial Invitational, an event hosted by St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas.
In singles action, Nikoleta Pytel secured a 6-3, 6-2 win. Eva Guta of Bucharest, Romania lost her singles match 4-6, 2-6. Lucia Carmena from Alcala de Henares, Spain also faced a challenging opponent and was defeated 1-6, 3-6.
In doubles matches, Pytel and Carmena lost their first match 2-6 but won their second with a score of 6-3. The pair of Josephina Bailetti and Eva Guta were beaten in both of their doubles matches, losing 1-6 and then 3-6.
The Kimbell Memorial Invitational is scheduled to continue through the weekend and will conclude on Sunday.
