The Office of Archaeological Studies (OAS), in partnership with the New Mexico Department of Agriculture (NMDA), has announced the launch of the New Mexico Archaeology Field Training Program. This initiative is designed to provide education and workforce development for individuals seeking careers in archaeological fieldwork.

The program, which received funding from the New Mexico Legislature in 2025, will operate as a statewide pilot. It offers immersive, practical training intended to prepare participants for employment on professional archaeological projects. The program is open to permanent residents of New Mexico and will run from September 2025 through early 2026. Participation is free, and accepted applicants may receive travel support and paid field experience.

“This is a unique opportunity for New Mexicans to gain in-demand field skills and get a foot in the door of a growing industry,” said OAS Executive Director John Taylor-Montoya, PhD.

There are two tracks available: Field Technician Track and Supervisor Track. The Field Technician Track does not require prior experience and provides entry-level training along with on-the-job experience in technician-level fieldwork. The Supervisor Track requires a bachelor’s degree or academic standing that would allow completion by year’s end; it focuses on advanced leadership and project management training, preparing participants for supervisory roles.

Applicants must be permanent residents of New Mexico who are physically able to perform tasks such as hiking, digging, carrying gear, and working in remote environments. They must also be available for up to three weeks of full-time field experience. Those applying for the Supervisor Track need to have completed or be close to completing a relevant degree by the end of the academic year.

Enrollment is free for all accepted participants. Additional financial support includes travel and lodging assistance during field training sessions as well as compensation for full-time field experience.

To apply, candidates should download an application form, submit it via email with proof of residency—and if applicable—academic transcripts or diplomas.

The Office of Archaeological Studies conducts research across New Mexico with a team comprising six archaeologists and support staff. Its mission includes identifying, interpreting, and sharing information about prehistoric and historic sites throughout the state while serving both state agencies and private organizations requiring archaeological studies as part of their development projects.
