The New Mexico Museum of Space History will host a memorial stair climb event on September 13, 2025, to honor the first responders who lost their lives during the September 11, 2001 attacks. The event, titled "Climb the Cube," will take place at the museum in Alamogordo.

Participants in the event will climb the equivalent of 110 stories, reflecting the number of floors in the World Trade Center towers. This symbolic act aims to recognize and remember firefighters, police officers, EMTs, K9 units, and other first responders who responded to the crisis.

Registration for Climb the Cube opens at 7:30 a.m. on the day of the event. Organizers encourage early registration due to limited space. Those taking part can also enter a raffle for a fire helmet valued at around $600, which is set to be donated for use by an active Chief or Deputy Chief firefighter. The helmet was donated by Milton Blankenship of Casco Industries. Limited-edition t-shirts will be available for $20.

“Each step in Climb the Cube represents resilience, courage, and sacrifice,” said April James of the New Mexico Museum of Space History. “It’s an opportunity for all of us to honor heroes while showing that their spirit continues to inspire us.”

Further information about registration is available at spacetrail.org/sites/stairclimb. For additional questions, contact Alamogordo Fire Chief Jerry Ramirez at (575) 439-4298 or afd@ci.alamogordo.nm.us.

The New Mexico Museum of Space History is part of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs and serves as a Smithsonian Affiliate. The museum highlights New Mexico’s role in U.S. space exploration history and includes features such as the International Space Hall of Fame and New Horizons Dome Theater.
