Matt Villareal appointed assistant athletic director for Lobo Basketball

The University of New Mexico Athletic Department has announced the appointment of Matt Villareal as the Assistant Athletic Director for Creative Services and Digital Strategy for Lobo Basketball. Villareal, an Albuquerque native, will return to his hometown to lead content creation, digital strategy, and brand storytelling for both men's and women's basketball programs.

In this new role, Villareal will manage recruiting creative, visual identity, fan engagement, and social media strategy with a focus on enhancing the Lobo Basketball brand. Kasey Byers, Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs, said: "Matt brings a dynamic blend of creativity, strategy, and passion for storytelling. He has worked at the highest levels of college basketball and knows how to connect with fans, recruits, and the community in authentic, innovative ways. We’re thrilled to welcome him back to Albuquerque and into the Lobo family."

Villareal previously spent six years at Gonzaga as the Creative Director of Basketball Recruiting. His work there included designing recruiting campaigns and managing social media content. During his tenure at Gonzaga, the Bulldogs reached significant milestones such as the 2021 National Championship game.

Expressing his enthusiasm about joining UNM Athletics, Villareal said: "I’m humbled and excited to join UNM Athletics in this new and innovative role. As an Albuquerque native, I know the power, significance, and impact of UNM Athletics and its effect on the great state of New Mexico."

Villareal's career also includes experience at Oklahoma State University and with the College Football Playoff as a videographer for the 2019 National Championship Game. He holds a Master of Business Administration from Gonzaga University and a bachelor's degree in Sports Media from Oklahoma State University.
