The University of New Mexico Lobos have set a new record in the Mountain West for academic achievements. A total of 231 student-athletes from UNM were named Mountain West Scholar-Athletes, marking the highest number recorded by any school in the conference's history. This achievement continues UNM's streak, as they have led the Mountain West in Scholar-Athlete selections for three consecutive years and 11 out of the last 12 years.

To qualify as a Mountain West Scholar-Athlete, students must maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher for the year. The Lobos narrowly surpassed Utah State, which had 227 student-athletes recognized. Both institutions are the first to exceed 200 honorees in a single year.

UNM's previous record was 197 honorees, set last year, which was also the former Mountain West record. Several teams at UNM achieved program records this year: women's track & field with 37 honorees, women's cross country with 25, and swimming & diving with 22. Men's golf and men's tennis matched their program highs with ten and eight honorees respectively.

Other sports also saw significant recognition: football had 23 honorees, baseball had 22, soccer had 18, softball had 17, men's track & field had 15, volleyball had 11, women's golf had eight, women's basketball had six, women's tennis had five, men's basketball had two, and men's cross country also had two.

Vice President/Director of Athletics Fernando Lovo expressed pride in the accomplishments of UNM's student-athletes. "I am continually amazed by the achievements of our student-athletes," he said. "To lead the Mountain West in total championships and to lead in both Mountain West All-Academic and Scholar-Athlete selections is a source of tremendous pride for our entire university."
