Today in Las Cruces, New Mexico, Deb Haaland, former Secretary of the Interior and current candidate for Governor of New Mexico, criticized efforts by Republicans to sell public lands. Her comments come as Doug Burgum, the Trump Administration's Interior Secretary, visits the state.

Haaland expressed concern over a tax-and-spending bill from President Trump's administration that could potentially allow 14 million acres of public lands in New Mexico to be sold. "This move is deceitful," she stated. "By selling our public lands, Donald Trump and his administration threaten to damage New Mexico’s economy and our way of life. These lands help provide sustenance, jobs, and billions for New Mexico’s economy." She also called on Burgum to address why he supports what she described as prioritizing corporate interests over the welfare of New Mexicans.

The outdoor recreation industry is a vital part of New Mexico's economy. In 2023 alone, it generated $3.2 billion in value added and supported more than 29,000 jobs. Haaland warned that the proposed changes by the Trump Administration could jeopardize these jobs and have severe impacts on rural communities across the state.
