Power The Future announced that New Mexico’s congressional delegation voted to uphold President Biden’s natural gas tax, despite both the U.S. House and Senate voting to repeal it. This announcement was made in a press release on February 26, 2025.

According to Power The Future, New Mexico’s entire Congressional delegation voted to maintain President Biden’s Natural Gas Tax, which is part of the Inflation Reduction Act. This tax increases costs for natural gas producers. However, the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives voted to repeal the tax. Representatives Vasquez, Stansbury, and Leger Fernandez, along with Senators Heinrich and Lujan, opposed the repeal.

"It’s sickening to see the supposed leaders of an energy state so out of touch with the people, but that’s clearly the case in New Mexico," said Larry Behrens, communications director for Power The Future. Behrens said that these politicians consistently work against the state's economic interests while disregarding high energy prices faced by families. He added that Americans had overwhelmingly rejected this agenda a few months ago, yet New Mexico's delegation continues to prioritize special interest groups.

The Biden Natural Gas Tax, effective this year, could lead to increased household energy prices due to higher natural gas production costs. Statista reports that over 80% of households in New Mexico use natural gas. Despite the delegation’s vote in favor of the tax, Power The Future applauded the repeal efforts in Congress.
