New Mexico legislators are considering a significant expansion of Medicaid despite the state already having a high percentage of its population enrolled in the program. The proposed bill, HB 186, is scheduled for discussion in the House Health Committee on Monday.

The state's Medicaid program currently spends $15.5 billion annually. There is concern about the federal government's willingness to cover more than 70% of the expansion costs under the Trump Administration.

The Rio Grande Foundation (RGF) has released a document providing further details on the plan. According to RGF, HB 186 is rated -8 in their Freedom Index vote rating and tracking system.
