Polls in 2024 indicated that New Mexicans are significantly concerned about public safety and increasing crime rates. As the 2025 Legislative Session begins, both political parties present differing approaches to address these issues.
During a conference last Friday, the majority party announced plans to focus on behavioral health initiatives aimed at crime prevention and the establishment of more CYFD offices to combat child abuse within the organization. However, these measures do not fully tackle the primary concern of public safety expressed by residents.
On Tuesday evening, the minority party unveiled their 4-step plan for the session, which emphasizes priorities such as the economy, education, healthcare, and public safety. Their strategy includes supporting some legislative proposals from the opposing party if they contribute to enhancing public safety.
For those interested in engaging with developments in Santa Fe and ensuring their voices are heard by legislators, the 2025 Pre-Legislative BASH is scheduled for January 16.
