Abortion Free New Mexico leader: ' New Mexico has sadly become a hot spot for abortion tourism'

Tara Shaver said, "Be it late term abortions, or now chemical abortions, the New Mexico abortion cartel is hell bent on promoting the most dangerous abortion practices upon unsuspecting women." She made this statement in an interview on January 8.

"New Mexico has sadly become a hot spot for abortion tourism and unrestricted abortion," said Tara L Shaver, Spokesperson. "Be it late term abortions, or now chemical abortions, the New Mexico abortion cartel is hell bent on promoting the most dangerous abortion practices upon unsuspecting women."

According to a report released by Abortion Free New Mexico titled "Abortion Clinic Landscape 2024," there are currently 14 abortion clinics throughout the state as of December 21, 2024. Nine of these clinics offer telemedicine appointments, allowing women to consult with providers virtually and receive pills—Mifepristone to block progesterone and Misoprostol to trigger contractions—by mail for home use.

The consumer materials included with the drugs prescribed for inducing abortion, particularly Mifepristone, include a warning: "Serious and sometimes fatal infections occur very rarely following spontaneous, surgical, and medical abortions, including following Mifiprex use." This labeling was revised by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) in January 2023. Reported issues include prolonged heavy bleeding that could indicate an incomplete abortion or complications requiring medical or surgical intervention. Bacterial infections and sepsis can also be side effects of abortion; however, these issues may present without fever or significant findings on a pelvic exam according to the Mifiprex prescribing information.

The freestanding abortion facilities across New Mexico prescribe medical abortions beyond the FDA's approved cutoff time frame of 10 weeks. Seven facilities in the state prescribe pills up to 11 weeks; three will prescribe up to 11 weeks and six days; and the Full Circle Health Clinic in Las Cruces prescribes up to 12 weeks. Alamo Women’s Clinic of Albuquerque and Southwestern Women’s Options are now owned by Alan Braid. Southwestern Women’s Options advertises performing abortions up to 32 weeks for fetal anomalies; however, a call to the facility reveals they limit scheduling of abortions to 25 weeks according to Abortion Free New Mexico’s December report.

According to her website, Shaver is a spokeswoman for Abortion Free New Mexico and a full-time pro-life missionary who has worked alongside her husband Bud Shaver since 2010 to make New Mexico "Abortion Free." Their efforts have been commissioned by Operation Rescue and featured in major national news outlets.
