The upcoming 2025 legislative session in New Mexico is set to address a range of critical issues, with a focus on safeguarding the rights and well-being of its residents. EQNM, an organization advocating for LGBTQ rights, is gearing up for the session which will commence mid-January in Santa Fe.
The organization emphasizes its commitment to protecting New Mexicans from potential federal policies under the incoming Trump administration. "Let’s be clear: This is our job, and we are well prepared for it," stated EQNM. They intend to maintain their long-standing priorities despite recent political changes.
During the 60-day session, state representatives will tackle various policies aimed at countering federal impacts and addressing ongoing state issues like public safety. EQNM plans to actively advocate for LGBTQ New Mexicans throughout this period and may urge community members to engage with their representatives.
Healthcare access remains a significant concern among citizens, especially regarding abortion and gender-affirming care. EQNM expects these topics to be high on the agenda. The organization is focused on preventing budget cuts that could hinder access to essential services and protecting personal data from federal scrutiny.
A progressive majority in the legislature, along with Governor Michelle Lujan-Grisham's support, bolsters confidence in advancing these initiatives. "In fact all of our statewide elected officials are ready to throw down for LGBTQ New Mexicans," EQNM highlighted.
Public safety also remains a priority. Last summer, EQNM and other groups opposed proposed measures they felt did not address root causes and might harm communities. In response, they are preparing a comprehensive public safety agenda targeting issues such as affordable housing, addiction treatment, mental health support, and criminal justice reforms.
Beyond these topics, EQNM will advocate for additional policies like lowering the voting age to 16 and implementing paid family leave. They aim to ensure that state systems adequately respond to LGBTQ constituents' needs.
