Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has appointed former state Senator Greg Nibert to the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission (PRC) for a six-year term starting January 1, 2025. Nibert will replace Commissioner James Ellison, whose term ended on December 31, 2024.

"I am honored to be nominated to the Public Regulation Commission," said Nibert. "My duty as a commissioner will be to regulate our utilities according to the laws of the land, which includes, first and foremost, the Energy Transition Act. The PRC plays a crucial role in ensuring we meet the renewable energy targets set forth in statute for the betterment of our state. I look forward to securing New Mexico’s energy future for generations to come."

Nibert was selected from over 30 candidates by the Public Regulation Commission Nominating Committee. This committee was established through legislation signed by Gov. Lujan Grisham in 2020 and is responsible for evaluating and recommending qualified candidates for such appointments.

New Mexico Public Regulation Commissioners receive an annual salary of $190,000.

Since 1987, Nibert has been a partner at Hinkle Shanor LLP, focusing on real property, energy, and administrative law. He has contributed significantly to major energy and natural resource projects across New Mexico. In addition to his legal career, he has served in both the New Mexico Senate and House of Representatives.
