A recent study suggests that a combination of renewable energy, battery storage, and energy efficiency presents the most economical alternative for replacing the coal-fired San Juan Generating Station. This facility, operated by Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM), is slated for closure in 2022.

Conducted by Synapse Energy Economics, the analysis indicates that an all-clean-energy solution would be 1.5 percent cheaper through 2036 compared to substituting with new gas plants. The report highlights potential savings of $94 million for PNM customers from this approach. These figures do not include additional savings related to environmental and public health improvements.

The findings were announced by Thomas Young, Sierra Club Regional Communications Manager.
