Interior Secretary Deb Haaland has issued two executive orders aimed at addressing climate change and reversing previous policies that favored fossil fuel development. These orders prioritize the consideration of the social cost of carbon in decision-making processes and direct agencies within the Department of the Interior to disregard Trump-era regulations related to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The focus is also on economic justice and supporting communities that depend heavily on fossil fuels.
In response, several New Mexico environmental groups have expressed their support for these actions. Camilla Feibelman, Director of the Sierra Club's Rio Grande Chapter, stated, "The age of Trump’s devastating energy dominance regime is over. Secretary Haaland is leading the way to justice for people, our communities, the climate, our air and our water."
Ben Shelton from Conservation Voters New Mexico commented on the significance of these initial steps by Secretary Haaland and the Biden administration. He emphasized that there is substantial work ahead in reviewing Interior policies with a focus on environmental justice.
Liliana Castillo from Climate Advocates Voces Unidas highlighted the importance of engaging communities affected by climate change and pollution in decision-making processes. She praised Secretary Haaland's recognition of finding solutions for pressing issues faced by New Mexicans.
Erik Schlenker-Goodrich from Western Environmental Law Center remarked on Secretary Haaland's ambitious vision for the Interior Department. He noted her willingness to utilize NEPA to drive positive action addressing intertwined climate, ecological, justice, and economic challenges.
