Sen. Linda Lopez Senate District 11 | Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter
The United States Supreme Court has rejected an attempt by industry groups and political allies to block the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Clean Air Act standards aimed at reducing methane emissions from the oil and gas sector. This decision allows the EPA's regulations, which include new standards for both existing and new equipment, to proceed while a lower court examines their legal validity.
Sierra Club, along with its partners, opposed the industry's claims in this case. The organization emphasized that these methane regulations are crucial for public health and climate protection. Methane is a significant greenhouse gas, with a warming potential over 80 times greater than carbon dioxide over two decades. The U.S. oil and gas industry contributes approximately 16 million metric tons of methane emissions annually.
The Sierra Club is recognized as a leading grassroots environmental group in America, advocating for clean energy, community health, wildlife protection, and preservation of natural spaces through various forms of activism.
