Charles Peifer Shareholder, Peifer, Hanson, Mullins & Baker, P.A. | New Mexico Foundation for Open Government (FOG)
The Foundation for Open Government (FOG) has appointed Christine Barber as its new executive director. Barber's career includes roles as the executive director of two non-profit organizations and a journalist at various publications, including the Gallup Independent, the Santa Fe New Mexican, and the Albuquerque Journal. She is also an accomplished author.
Jessica Onsurez, FOG president, expressed confidence in Barber's appointment amid growing challenges to transparency and public access to information. “Transparency and the public’s right to know are coming under attack from numerous fronts,” Onsurez stated. “We are pleased to welcome Christine on board at this critical time as FOG takes on these challenges.”
Barber holds degrees in Journalism from the University of Florida and Biology from the University of New Mexico. Her journalistic work has earned her accolades from several organizations such as the New Mexico Press Association and Associated Press Managing Editors. Additionally, she has been recognized for her writing with awards like "best book" at the New Mexico and Arizona Book Awards in 2013.
Barber succeeds Melanie Majors, who is retiring after years of service with FOG. Onsurez praised Majors' contributions: “Melanie not only has years of outstanding service to the FOG community, but she has built on our strong foundation allowing us to move to the future.”
Majors' career spans over 35 years in communications across various media sectors including newspapers, television, and public relations. She began as a reporter for Grants Daily Beacon before moving on to KOB-TV 4 News. Her experience extends into academia where she served as an adjunct professor at the University of New Mexico.
Throughout her career, Majors received multiple awards from entities such as the New Mexico Press Association and was honored with the Vista Award by the Public Relations Society of America in 2008.
