Santa Fe New Mexican reported on November 17, 2024, that new legislative leaders have been selected following caucus meetings in Santa Fe.
In the House, Democrats have appointed Santa Fe Representative Reena Szczepanski as the majority floor leader. This decision was made as both parties prepared for the upcoming legislative session. In the Senate, Mimi Stewart from Albuquerque was reelected as Senate president pro tempore. Senator Peter Wirth of Santa Fe will continue his role as majority leader, a position he has held since 2017.
House Republicans made history by selecting Representative Gail Armstrong from Magdalena as their minority leader. She becomes the first woman to lead the House Republican caucus. Meanwhile, Senate Republicans unanimously chose Farmington Senator Bill Sharer as their minority leader last week. He takes over from Senator Greg Baca of Belen, who did not seek reelection this year.
