Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has declared a statewide emergency in New Mexico, issuing two declarations that release $1.5 million in state funding to aid agencies responding to the ongoing winter storm affecting much of the state.

“This declaration gives the state more resources to continue supporting local responders as this major snowstorm persists,” said Gov. Lujan Grisham. “I thank every single responder who has been out in the cold since Wednesday clearing roads, escorting people to safety, and doing what needs to be done to support New Mexicans challenged by this storm.”

Since Wednesday, various agencies have been working alongside local emergency managers and public safety personnel. New Mexico State Police officers have been assisting stranded motorists, while the Department of Transportation has deployed 255 snowplows to clear roads continuously. The New Mexico National Guard is aiding efforts in Las Vegas, and the State Emergency Operations Center is coordinating resources for a multi-agency response.

Executive Orders 2024-158 and 2024-159 allocate $750,000 each to the New Mexico National Guard and other emergency response initiatives.

Residents are advised to minimize travel and take necessary precautions during the storm. Information on winter weather safety and warming center locations can be accessed at dhsem.nm.gov/severeweather. In emergencies, including being stranded roadside, individuals should call 911.
