CTEH evaluates necessity of setbacks in oil and gas production

CTEH has released a report evaluating the health impacts of oil and gas well production, focusing on whether setbacks are necessary or beneficial. The report highlights several key conclusions based on existing data and studies.

The findings suggest that health outcome studies related to assumed exposures lack consistency and cohesiveness, making it difficult to establish causal evidence linking oil and gas emissions to specific adverse health outcomes. Additionally, measured exposure data from communities near oil and gas developments in New Mexico and other states, combined with formal risk assessments, indicate that chemical levels do not pose significant health risks.

The report advocates for further environmental measurement and risk assessment analysis in New Mexico to reduce scientific uncertainty and public concern regarding public health impacts. It argues against a prescriptive "one-size-fits-all" setback policy, suggesting instead that policies should be informed by best available science through established frameworks to protect New Mexico citizens effectively.

"Measured exposure data collected in communities near oil and gas development in NM and other states, along with formal risk assessments, have shown chemicals NOT to been at levels of concern for adverse health risks," the report states.

"A policy mandating a prescriptive, 'one-size-fits-all' setback is NOT a public health policy based on best available science," the report concludes.
