City workers have completed a new roundabout at the intersection of Mountain Road and 19th Street in Albuquerque, providing a connection between The Rail Trail and Tiguex Park. The project continues despite the withdrawal of federal funding for the Rail Trail.
The roundabout officially opened on October 3, according to city officials. Terry Brunner, director of the Metropolitan Redevelopment Agency for Albuquerque, commented on the significance of the development. “Yes, one can get excited about roundabouts — especially this one at Mountain and 19th Street in Old Town. (It) connects the Rail Trail to Tiguex Park and the Albuquerque Museum. A month ahead of schedule, btw.”
Construction is ongoing for other sections of the seven-mile multi-use path that will link Downtown Albuquerque with Old Town. Work is also progressing in areas such as the Sawmill District and near Central Avenue and First Street. In September, two archways were installed along the Sawmill section of the trail.
Terri Cole, president and CEO of the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce (GACC), stated that the Rail Trail supports GACC’s mission to encourage a strong business climate. She added that for several years, the Chamber has backed this urban trail initiative to help residents and visitors move from historic Rail Yards through key city landmarks.
