This morning, the passing of former State Senator John Arthur Smith was announced. In response to the news, Senator Crystal Brantley from Elephant Butte released a statement reflecting on Smith's legacy and their shared vision for New Mexico.

Senator Brantley quoted Smith’s final speech in the Senate, where he urged members to "move forward as friends—with dignity and honor." She expressed her mourning over his death and acknowledged their differences in political views but highlighted their common goal of fostering fiscal prudence and economic opportunity for New Mexico.

Brantley also emphasized their shared Luna County roots, which she believes made them more similar than different. She remarked on Smith's legacy, emphasizing the importance of friendship and collaboration.

"It is my sincere desire and goal to see his vision through," Brantley stated. Despite noting that the Senate has shifted towards progressive spending priorities since Smith's departure, she remains hopeful about New Mexico's future. She advocates for civility, respect, and collaboration as a path forward for the state, which she describes as "the John Arthur Smith way."
