Las Cruces firefighters and Mesilla Valley Search and Rescue collaborated to save a 24-year-old man injured in an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) crash on Tuesday evening.
Shortly after 7 p.m. on July 30, firefighters were dispatched to an undeveloped area at the far west end of Thurmond Road, where an ATV had crashed in rugged terrain. Due to the challenging landscape, fire crews requested assistance from Mesilla Valley Search and Rescue, which has a utility task vehicle equipped with a Stokes litter.
The 24-year-old driver of the ATV sustained multiple injuries and required careful extraction from the rugged terrain to a paved area. From there, he was transported to an awaiting medivac and airlifted to University Medical Center of El Paso.
The driver was conscious but in serious condition when he was transported to the hospital.
The cause of the ATV crash has yet to be determined.
