UNM Medical Group appoints new executive medical director for clinic operations

Alex Schevchuck, MD, MBA, MS, FACC, an associate professor with the Division of Cardiology at The University of New Mexico’s School of Medicine and medical director for UNM Telehealth, has been named executive medical director for UNM Medical Group, Inc. Clinic Operations.

“I am passionate about patient care, medical leadership, and improving the health of New Mexicans. I’m excited and honored to accept the role of executive medical director for UNM Medical Group, Inc. Clinic Operations," said Schevchuck.

Born in Ukraine, Schevchuck obtained his medical degree in 2000 at Ukraine’s Ternopil State Medical University and completed the university’s Master of Science program before relocating to New Mexico in 2004.

Schevchuck completed his internal medicine residency and cardiology fellowship training at the UNM School of Medicine. He joined the UNM Cardiology Division as a faculty member as a clinician educator. He is board-certified in general internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, and echocardiography. This spring, Schevchuck completed the executive MBA program from the UNM Anderson School of Management.

Schevchuck’s clinical expertise includes advanced and interventional echocardiography, valvular heart disease, and adult congenital heart disease. He is the medical director of the General Cardiology Clinic, the Heart Valve Clinic, and the Adult Congenital Heart Disease program.

Along with his clinical responsibilities, Schevchuck has championed the Project Access to Critical Cerebral Emergency Support Services (ACCESS) program, supporting more than 20 rural hospitals with their neurology, neurosurgery, and cardiology needs.

Schevchuck will report directly to Jennifer Phillips, MD, UNM Medical Group’s Chief Medical Officer and will oversee the clinical operations of all UNM Medical Group clinics in conjunction with clinic leaders in the organization’s Clinic Operations Group.

The UNM Medical Group represents more than 1,100 clinical practitioners in over 150 specialties. Its providers serve as primary caregivers at UNM Hospital as well as specialty care and general practice clinics throughout New Mexico.

Established in 2007, UNM Medical Group supports the clinical education and research missions of the UNM School of Medicine to improve the health of all New Mexicans.
