A Commemoration of the Treaty of 1868 event will be held at the Bosque Redondo Memorial site on Saturday, June 15.

The event is scheduled for 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

June is celebrated as Treaty Month in New Mexico, commemorating the signing of the Treaty of 1868 between the United States and the Navajo Nation.

Attendees can receive half-yard pieces of muslin cloth that was donated by the Sherman House Museum and Fairfield County Heritage Association in Lancaster, Ohio as part of their partnership with the New Mexico Historic Sites. Several Dine families will receive sheep from the Friends of Bosque Redondo Memorial’s flock of Navajo Churro Sheep, in recognition of the treaty.

During the celebration, Shawn Price and the Dineh Tah’ Dancers will perform cultural dances on site. After the dances, Price will give an informational culture program regarding the Navajo Treaty of 1868 in the Memorial Resource Room. Topics of the lesson will include Peace Commissioners General William T. Sherman and Colonel Samuel F. Tappan.

Admission is $7 per adult, with children 16 years old and younger admitted for free. Members of the Museum of New Mexico Foundation, Friends of Coronado and Jemez, Native or Tribal affiliations, and disabled veterans are also admitted for free.

Old Fort Days events will also be going on at Fort Sumner during this time, with their events running from June 12 - June 16.
