Ashley McMains, a nursing student at The University of New Mexico College of Nursing, is not only a testament to resilience and determination but also an embodiment of compassion. Graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), McMains' journey has been punctuated by challenges and triumphs that have molded her into an exceptional individual ready to make significant contributions in the health care field.
Throughout her academic journey, McMains has consistently demonstrated commitment to excellence and service. She has held various leadership roles including serving as the Partnership Chair for Lobothon and Philanthropy Chair Officer for Student Nurses of America. Her participation as a National Student Nurses of America delegate in Orlando, Fla., further underscored her leadership capabilities and ability to connect with fellow nursing students globally.
However, McMains' inspiration to pursue nursing goes beyond academic achievements. Having grown up with a nurse practitioner mother, she found her role model early on. It was her mother's steadfast resilience and compassion that sparked McMains' passion for nursing and set her on the path to making a difference in others' lives.
“My mom inspired me to continue to move forward and push through everything I've ever been through. She is the strongest person I know, and she is definitely my role model and the reason I am graduating today,” said McMains.
Despite facing personal tragedies such as losing her grandmother and stepfather, coupled with experiencing a fire incident at her apartment during her final year, McMains' determination remained unwavering. Supported by family, friends, and faith, she persevered through these challenging times emerging stronger than before.
McMains recounts moments of profound connection during her clinicals when she became an essential communication link for a Spanish-speaking patient in labor. Being the only Spanish speaker among the nurses on duty that day enabled Ashley to bridge language barriers ensuring the patient received appropriate care.
Looking ahead, McMains plans to continue her academic journey by applying to the Doctorate Nurse Practitioner (DNP) program with a focus on pediatric nursing. This decision is a testament to her enduring commitment to serving others.
McMains offers advice to current and aspiring students facing obstacles: embrace challenges, get involved, and never underestimate the power of resilience and community support.
As she prepares for graduation, McMains reflects not only on her accomplishments but also on the journey that has brought her here. For her, graduation is not just a personal achievement but also a tribute to the unwavering support of her loved ones.
“When I got into nursing school, I was already focused on graduating and the next thing," McMains said. "I didn't really celebrate the accomplishment of getting in. Now, I am here, I made it, I’m graduating – so I’m going to sit back and appreciate what I've already done. The future is bright, and right now I want to take a moment and smell the roses.”
