New Mexico confirms first measles cases since 2021

The New Mexico Department of Health (NMHealth) announced today that two children from Taos County are the first confirmed measles cases in the state since 2021. The children, both under 10 years old, live in the same household, were not vaccinated, and developed fever and rash after returning from international travel.
Albuquerque unveils new headquarters for Community Safety Department

The City of Albuquerque today unveiled the new headquarters for the Albuquerque Community Safety Department (ACS) to local media. The 10,800-square-foot facility, situated in the International District, will accommodate ACS staff and programs while also serving as a community resource center. This marks the first headquarters for an alternative health response department in the nation.
UNM concludes second cohort of FRESSH program fostering research expansion

The University of New Mexico concluded its 2023-2024 cohort of the Fostering Research Expansion in the Social Sciences and Humanities (FRESSH) program last month, involving 21 faculty members from 18 different departments across campus.
Albuquerque issues proactive health alert due to smoke from fire

The City of Albuquerque Environmental Health Department’s Air Quality Program was notified of a fire at 4600 William St SE 87105 on May 31, 2024, at 7:00 a.m. Bernalillo County Fire Rescue responded to the scene while the Air Quality Program continued to monitor the situation. Although the air quality monitors did not reach levels standard to issue a health alert, an alert was proactively issued to warn residents of the smoke. The alert was issued from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
City announces schedule for pride month celebrations

The city is set to host a series of Pride events starting Monday, June 3, 2024. The festivities kick off with Silverfest, an all-ages event celebrating the 55+ community with food, games, karaoke, and entertainment at The Orpheum Community Hub.
Civilian Police Oversight Advisory Board to attend public hearing on June 4

A possible quorum of the Civilian Police Oversight Advisory Board may attend a hearing in the case United States v. City of Albuquerque, et al., 1:14-cv-1025 JB/JFR, presided over by Judge Browning. The public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at the Vermejo Courtroom of the United States District Courthouse located at 333 Lomas Blvd NW, Albuquerque, NM 87102.
NMSU appoints Mariana Ortega as assistant VP for diversity initiatives

New Mexico State University (NMSU) announced Friday that Mariana Ortega has been appointed as the first assistant vice president for diversity initiatives within the Office of Equity, Inclusion and Diversity. The appointment follows a national search, and Ortega will begin her new role on July 15.
UNM mourns loss of esteemed anthropology professor Bruce Huckell

Bruce Huckell, associate professor of Anthropology at The University of New Mexico and a leader in the fields of geoarchaeology, lithic technology, and early prehistoric foragers in North America, died on May 13. Huckell received his bachelor's degree in 1972, his Master of Arts in 1976, and his doctorate degree in Arid Lands Resource Sciences in 1990, all from the University of Arizona.
Albuquerque moves forward with youth housing navigation center

The City of Albuquerque's vision for a specialty housing navigation center for young adults aged 18-25 is progressing as the city has closed on the purchase of the San Mateo Inn at 2424 San Mateo Blvd NE, in City Council District 7. Acquired for $4,780,000, the hotel will be renovated into a housing navigation center offering age-appropriate wraparound services to help young adults access permanent housing and achieve self-sufficiency.
Albuquerque launches Summer of Nonviolence campaign with inaugural event

On Saturday, June 1, the City of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County will launch the inaugural Summer of Nonviolence campaign at Pat Hurley Park (Upper Loop) from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, with sound available for media at 11:30 a.m.
NMSU's HSI STEM Resource Hub marks five years with final conference

In 2018, New Mexico State University (NMSU) received a research award under the National Science Foundation’s Hispanic Serving Institutions Program. The five-year, $2.6 million grant funded the creation of an HSI STEM Resource Hub at NMSU, in collaboration with Doña Ana Community College and California State University-Northridge.

Former UNM athlete invited to NCAA Sports Forum

A former University of New Mexico student-athlete has received a rare invitation this summer to advance her career in sports. Maddie Deucher, a 2024 graduate who was part of the Women’s Swimming and Diving team, is among only 200 student-athletes invited to attend the NCAA Sports Forum in Indianapolis this week.
