The Department of Senior Affairs, in collaboration with Chief Administrative Officer Samantha Sengel, recently held a pinning ceremony to honor members of the AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent (FGP) and Senior Companion Programs (SCP). The event celebrated the remarkable contributions of volunteers aged 55 and above who have been instrumental in guiding students towards higher academic achievement as Foster Grandparents. They also provide care for homebound individuals as Senior Companions. A total of 18 volunteers were recognized during the ceremony.

Chief Administrative Officer Samantha Sengel expressed her admiration for these volunteers, stating, “Volunteers like AmeriCorps Seniors leave an impact that will continue to be felt for generations, inspiring countless hearts along the way. Through their hard work and shared values, they’re not just building connections, they are also forging bonds that help make Albuquerque the best place for families to thrive.”

Anna Sanchez, Director of Senior Affairs, echoed this sentiment. She emphasized the growing need for such volunteers as Albuquerque's population ages along with the rest of the country. “As Albuquerque ages along with the rest of the country, there is a tremendous need for folks who are willing to donate their wisdom and expertise to help provide care and compassion for others,” she said. “We are incredibly grateful for our Foster Grandparents and Senior Companions who have answered the call to serve, and we hope to see these programs continue to grow.”

Volunteers play a crucial role in fulfilling the mission of the Department of Senior Affairs. This mission is centered around helping communities flourish through care and compassion while embracing aging. Opportunities are available for individuals or groups interested in giving back at all ages.
