Martin Vasquez, a recent graduate from the University of New Mexico (UNM), is making strides in the field of Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE). Vasquez, who holds a Doctor of Philosophy in PETE, is passionate about teaching and bringing diversity to the education sector.

"I always felt like I had an aspiration to help others, and specifically the youth," Vasquez said. "My experiences really led me to want to do teaching, but then I also wanted to be a physical education teacher."

Vasquez's journey began at the University of Wyoming, where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in physical education and PETE. His transition to UNM was influenced by mentors and colleagues, leading him to pursue his Ph.D. in PETE.

"I love the diversity. I love the warm weather. I really enjoy not being the only person of color in most spaces that I'm in," Vasquez expressed about his experience in New Mexico compared to Wyoming.

With a commitment to inclusive education, Vasquez has been involved in programs catering to students with diverse needs, such as the Albuquerque Sign Language (ASL) Academy. His personal and professional growth in this area has been significant.

In addition to his academic achievements, Vasquez met his girlfriend, Amberley, at the ASL academy, where he is learning sign language to communicate with her.

As Vasquez transitions into a teaching role at UNM, he remains focused on fostering relationships with his students and advocating for diversity in the education field. His research focuses on the experiences of ethnically diverse individuals in educational spaces, aiming to address equity issues in classrooms.

Vasquez's dedication to education and commitment to diversity have earned him recognition, including a scholarship for underrepresented individuals in his field. His enthusiasm for teaching and passion for making a difference in students' lives highlight his future as an educator.
