UNM’s Speech & Hearing Sciences department is gearing up to host free screenings in honor of Better Speech & Hearing Month. The event, scheduled for Monday, May 6, will provide various screenings for individuals aged five and up, as well as preschoolers aged three to five years old.

“This is an opportunity for New Mexicans to seek reassurance if, for example, they have concerns about their grandparents' hearing or their child’s speech or language development. ”It’s just another way that UNM makes New Mexico better,” shared Speech & Hearing Department Chair and Associate Professor Phyllis Palmer.

Clinic Instructor Mary Hartley highlighted the importance of these screenings for both the community and future speech-language pathologists and audiologists. “This is an opportunity for speech-language pathologists and audiologists to give to the community and to instill this practice in our speech and language students,” Hartley emphasized.

Interested individuals can secure a spot for the free screenings by calling 505-277-4453, although walk-ins are also welcome. The event will take place at the UNM Speech & Hearing Sciences building located at 1700 Lomas Blvd. NE 87016, Suite 1300.

The initiative aligns with the commemoration of Better Hearing and Speech Month, which was established by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association in 1927.
