Crestencia Pihlaja, a 2L at The University of New Mexico School of Law, stood out at the Hispanic National Bar Association moot court competition in Seattle, Wash. in March, earning second place for Best Oral Argument. Pihlaja expressed her gratitude to those who supported her during the competition, including the New Mexico Hispanic Bar Association, which covered the travel expenses for her and teammate Damon Nieto.

Pihlaja shared, “I’d like to express my appreciation for the New Mexico Hispanic Bar Association and all our guest judges for their immense support. I am also extremely grateful for the support and teaching that my coaches and advisors, Kateri Garcia West and Ret. Justice Ed Chavez, provided for our team.”

Reflecting on the preparation process, Pihlaja emphasized the importance of the practice sessions with various judges and legal professionals, stating, “Each practice run helped me continually improve my argument; our guest judges provided excellent feedback which helped me shape and shift my outline and prepare for questions.”

The rigorous preparation involved drafting a detailed appellate brief, conducting research on past court decisions, and outlining oral arguments for both sides of the case. Pihlaja and Nieto dedicated themselves to honing their skills and knowledge in preparation for the competition.

Looking ahead, Pihlaja expressed her interest in exploring different practice areas within the legal field, particularly appellate law and civil litigation. The experience at the Hispanic National Bar Association moot court competition has further fueled her passion for pursuing a career in law.

Acknowledging the support she received, Pihlaja mentioned a long list of individuals who assisted in her preparation for the competition, including retired Chief Justice Ed Chavez, Judge David Urias, and other legal professionals who played a role in helping her and Nieto succeed at the event.
